Hello everyone. My name is Mike, and I’m a recovering opiate addict.
I started this website because I can’t think of anything else to do to help fight the opiate epidemic. I’m tired of sitting crying while reading stories from mothers that have lost their children to heroin, and the horrible things people say about us addicts when they comment.
I’ve lost many close friends to overdose, and suicide as an exit strategy for addiction. People that I’ve known since childhood. People that were once, the best friend you could ever ask for. Yet, because they were junkies, they were labeled as losers, low lifes, scumbags, the list goes on and on. If you knew them before all this though, before it all took over. You would have loved them as much as I did.
Due to the stigma surrounding addiction, many people are ashamed of their past, and don’t want anyone to know that they’re “one of us”. I think that those of us, like myself, that aren’t ashamed to openly admit that we’re addicts, we have an obligation to speak for those that can’t, or won’t. Only those of us that have been in the battle can REALLY know what addiction is like. I don’t care how many classes you take, patients you talk to, articles you read, you CANNOT TRULY KNOW IT UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN THERE!
I’ve got a million things to say about this, and everything all wants to come out at once. So, instead of going off on a rant, I’ll end this here. There will be a ton more to follow!
To all of you addicts that are still in the trenches, fighting that battle. It can be done. I love you all!
